Amorphis – The Beginning of Times

Amorphis - The Beginning of Times

Amorphis is a heavy metal band from Finland formed in 1990. They have been known throughout their career as playing many different styles of metal; including heavy, prog, folk, and death elements. They released their newest album “The Beginning of Times” on June 1.

“The Beginning of Times” is an album that I see realy melding together a lot of different styles for the band. While the album is definetly a heavy metal album, it also has very strong folk influences and progressive styles more akin to Paradise Lost(which I feel if you like them, you would enjoy this album.)

Now, I’m not the biggest fan of Amorphis but I have been getting into them more lately, starting with Skyforger(2009) and listening on back. I must say this is one of the best sounding albums I have listened to. Vocalist Tomi Joutsen sounds amazing. Both his cleans and his growls are very clear and prominent throughout the album. Perhaps his best performance to date. The first two songs released “You I Need” and “My Enemy” are terrific songs in their own right. Very powerful and folky as is the rest of the album. I definelty have fallen in love with “Song of the Sage” which probably has the folkiest sound on the album, a great song with great lyrics and a great sound. Synth, guitars, drums, vocals, all will take you back to a medievil feel upon listening to it.

Rating: 8/10

A very solid album with lots of prog and folk influences throughout. Fans should love it, new listeners should enjoy it.

About Matthew Kuritz

Born in 1989 in a small town in South Carolina, Matthew was raised on metal. His father, a huge KISS and other classic rock/metal fan and his brother wh owas raised during he hay-day of Hair Metal and Grunge, Matthew was made to do this. I digest any and all music that comes my way; not just metal. Metal for me strikes the rebellious, angry, and energizing nerve that no other music can. Metal has the most talent, most feeling, and most power than any kind of music. I am always up for discussing anything and everything involving metal and other music.
