I don’t think that “New Death Celebrity” from modern extreme metal band Descending is a bad album by any means. Hell, I listened to it six times while reviewing it over the past week. It’s a fucking good album. The band itself shows a lot of talent doing what they do. That is just it; they show talent doing what they do and nothing else. The band knows their style of music and I do not think they are going to stray away from that path anytime soon.
Vocalist Jon Simvonis is probably the highlight of the band for me. He does a really good job managing numerous different vocal styles on the album. From guttural to shrieks he has decent range that fits in with me the music very well. He also has this weird clean vocal/yell that sounds like Jonathan Davis of Korn’s yelling, weird, twang vocal. Again, it fits well into the music. What do you get from this band though? Lots of scaling riffs up and down the fret board, lots of power chord breakdowns, blast beats, and double bass drumming. Not much different on any other songs for that matter.
Songs like “The Energy” and “Until I Generate” and “Escape the Mirror” are all good songs in their own rights. But they all sound so similar; every song on the album does this. I want to say that this band has a lot of promise but I do not think they do. Until they get some musical creativity in the band I don’t see them ever deviating from the sound they have created now. Obviously the fans of the band will enjoy the sound, but it will be hard for new people to really appreciate it. When they hear this and then dig back in the past or into the future, there will not be much parody musically.
Rating: 5/10
It’s an overall decent album. If you like one song then you are going to like them all. It’s easy to get distracted and tune out this album. Five or six songs in you may think you are still on the first song. An easy mistake to make.
