Guilty Pleasures in Music

What is a guilty pleasure band? Well its a band outside of your usual genre of music that you like to listen to. For some people it is something that they are ashamed to admit that they listen to. It can be something such as a black metal fan listening to Boyz 2 Men. But that wouldn’t be very KVLT now would it? That’s why it is a guilty pleasure.

Well I’m here to admit today what some of my guilty pleasures are and why I like them. It can’t be all metal all the time now.can it my friends? Maybe some of our readers will lose respect for me when they see what I have on my Zune. Yes, I did say Zune. I don’t delve into Apple products, but this isn’t the place to discuss that.

So what do I listen to? Is it country? Rap? Oldies? Yummy yummy I’ve got love in my tummy? Well here we go, I will list some for you:

Garth Brooks
Why Garth Brooks? I’m a fan of singer/songwriters as much as I am anything else. His songs tell a story that any human bring can relate to. Songs like “Friends In Low Places” and “The Thunder Rolls” are commonly accepted as some of the greatest songs ever written.

Tom Jones
Why TJ? Have you ever listened to Tom Jones sing? It’s quite effortless. He just opens his mouth and this amazing voice comes out. Some of the greatest songs ever written! His originality for the time as well. Such sexual undertones in upbeat songs was something barely anybody was doing. I’m sure everybody at least knows “It’s Not Unusual.”

Lady Gaga
Ok look, I don’t really know why I like Gaga. I think it just comes down to she is a good singer and her songs are infectious. Now if you want to criticize me and say that she doesn’t have a good voice, how about go look up some stuff from when she became LADY GAGA. Not to mention she is a KISS fan.

DMX
Seriously? What will encompass the attitude, aggression, and raw emotion that is the same thing that we love in heavy metal! Not to mention he does about as much drugs as EMMURE does. Which, apparently isn’t an easy thing to say.

Bon Jovi
Ok I just love Bon Jovi. He encompasses the songwriting that I love, great vocals, and songs that are just downright fun. If you have ever played one of the songs in Rock Band, you will know that. And you know what? After twenty some odd years not only does the man still sound good, the entire damn band sounds good!! Also, the different styles the band has used over the years shows the overall creativity of the band. Jennifer Nettles anybody?

The Oak Ridge Boys
Ok…..this is probably the least expected one. Why the hell would I want to listen to a band that was primarily a gospel band, and later a country band? It’s the four part harmonies, it really is. It’s so hard to find a group that makes good songs, and have amazing vocalists. Of course I don’t listen to every song they have ever written, but what I have I liked.

So what was the point of this? Well…..I guess their really is not one. But I wanted to be open with all of our readers and let them know that I am not metal all day, everyday.

So I ask you metal fans, what are some artists that you listen to that are outside of your comfort zone?

Matthew Kuritz

About Matthew Kuritz

Born in 1989 in a small town in South Carolina, Matthew was raised on metal. His father, a huge KISS and other classic rock/metal fan and his brother wh owas raised during he hay-day of Hair Metal and Grunge, Matthew was made to do this. I digest any and all music that comes my way; not just metal. Metal for me strikes the rebellious, angry, and energizing nerve that no other music can. Metal has the most talent, most feeling, and most power than any kind of music. I am always up for discussing anything and everything involving metal and other music.
