Okay, first off I think it should be known that I would never have given the all female band, Indica a chance had it not been for Metal Delirium’s very own Blitzzero linking me one of their songs. I felt that they would just be another to join the ranks of the many Nightwish knock-offs that have spewed forth over the past few years. Especially after learning that their producer is none other than Nightwish frontman Tuomas Holopainen. But upon hearing “Islands of Light” I was intrigued and new I had to give their newest album A Way Away a spin. Let me just say that upon first listen, they shattered all preconceived notions I had of the band. It is a very fun, upbeat album all the way through. The music is lively and matches Johanna Salomaa’s unique vocals very nicely. Her style is reminiscent at times of Anneke van Giersbergen of The Gathering, and at other times it is clear she is carving her own path. There’s a lot going on here. Every song sounds different and fresh. “As If” seems as if it could be the theme for a spy scene in a movie. Songs like, “Straight and Arrow” and “Scissor Paper Rock” are very fun to listen to. It does get a wee bit poppy at times like on the track “Precious Dark.” But never too much to turn these metal tuned ears away. This band is fresh and different from all the female fronted bands out there right now. I should have know seeing as they come from Helsinki, Finland. If you haven’t heard them yet check out A Way Away. I highly recommend it.
