I have been sitting on “Coils of Entropy” from Nephelium for about a month now. I didn’t want to write a review because the band just has so much packed into the album. You can hear everything in this album; from old school death, to black, to thrash. One thing that really sticks out to me is the Arabic influence in the band. I didn’t hear it at first but once I read articles about them and other people talking about it, they began to pop up for me. Of course the band is the first metal band to come from the Middle East, having now settled in Toronto, they are ready to officially take the metal world by storm.
I’m just going to go ahead and get the only negative I can come up with about the album. Honestly, it’s more of a personal preference than a negative. I do not like how long the songs are. For me when I listen to a death metal song I want it to be around the four minute mark, where most of these are around five and some are seven or longer. It gets kind of boring after awhile. But there is a positive in it for Nephelium, their songs are interesting. They have enough tempo and style changes in each song to keep them interesting.
The album starts out with “Burial Ground” and they held nothing back from the start. From the first second of the album until the last second in the title track “Coils of Entropy” it is straight death metal. No acoustics, no break points, just 100% brutal death metal, in your face, like us or don’t action. One of the highlights for me is the guitar solo in “Halls of Judgment” it adds just that perfect amount of flavor and style to make me think that it is the best song on the album.
Rating: 8/10
It’s worth a listen if you are a fan of death metal, or just good metal. From start to finish the album is a punishing mix of death, black, and thrash metal with a nice touch of their home town Arabic influences thrown in.
