Overkill – Ironbound

Overkill is an American thrash metal band that formed in New Jersey around 1980 and released their first album in 1985. Releasing fifteen albums and two live albums over the years, they are a standard in American heavy metal and not going anywhere. Plus with a singer whose nickname is Blitz, how can you go wrong?

Their 2010 release, “Ironbound” does not dissapoint either. A lot of thrash bands from back in the day seem to re-hash or re-use a lot of the old sound or style they played. Those are the ones that didn’t make it, or in the case of Slayer they miraculously made it. Overkill has always had a sound that I can’t describe. Perhaps a mix of the raw power of Testament with the soaring vocal powers usually found in Anthrax or Metal Church.

This album is a powerful, fast, thrash heavy album. Really is quite a testament to how well a good thrash band can really do. Songs like “Ironbound” really show off Blitz’s vocal ablitities while songs like “Endless War” is thrash at it’s purest along with “The Goal is Your Soul.” One of the best thrash albums of the 2000′s easily. On the level to me of Kreators “Hordes of Chaos” and Megadeths “Endgame”.

Rating 8/10

A band that has really gone overlooked and buried by the likes of Megadeth, Anthrax, and Metallica. But tehy are just as good if not better than any of those bands and this album is a true showing of that.

About Matthew Kuritz

Born in 1989 in a small town in South Carolina, Matthew was raised on metal. His father, a huge KISS and other classic rock/metal fan and his brother wh owas raised during he hay-day of Hair Metal and Grunge, Matthew was made to do this. I digest any and all music that comes my way; not just metal. Metal for me strikes the rebellious, angry, and energizing nerve that no other music can. Metal has the most talent, most feeling, and most power than any kind of music. I am always up for discussing anything and everything involving metal and other music.
