This isn’t an album that I was overly impressed with at first. It seemed very basic and just in general not something that I was interested in. I forced myself to listen to it a few more times and as I did I began to appreciate it slightly. It’s still not something that I am going to back to for many more listens. From the boring song structure and the mid-tempo guitar riffs it really just bored me.
“Heaven’s Gate” is the second full-length album from Souldrainer. Usually when I review a band that I am listening to for the first time I have the intentions of going back into the catalog and at least getting a feel for what their past sound was. Yeah, I had listened to one song and realized that their first CD was more of the same and that I had no intentions of it. Edvardsson’s vocals leave something to be desired just like his guitar playing. Their really just is not much for me to say about this album except that it bored me, even when I did enjoy it. I found myself phasing in and out of songs and when I would come back it would be a different song that sounds identical. If their was one song I would tell you to listen to it would be “Gate Guard” if only for the rather interesting electronic synth in the middle. Other than that, NONE.
Rating: 2/10
It’s a genre of music that I often find myself liking, but this treads the line between slow doom and death metal and it doesn’t do it well. Slow songs that bore me and uninspired music that leaves me disinterested.
